Continental Maritime was recently recognized by San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox and Mark Leary of Cal-Recycle along with other member companies of the San Diego Industrial Environmental Association (IEA) during their 6th Annual Earth Day Celebration at the County Administration Building. Since 2006, Continental Maritime has joined with the County Supervisor, Greg Cox, the County of San Diego, and IEA in their annual Earth Day public awareness campaign for the proper management & disposal of universal waste.

Universal waste is special type of hazardous waste that is generated by everyone that often contains hazardous substances such as mercury, lead, copper, etc. Common examples of universal wastes are batteries, fluorescent tubes, and some electronic devices such as computers, televisions, cell phones, etc.

This year to recognize the County of San Diego’s successful partnership with businesses, Mark Leary, Acting Director of the State’s Cal-Recycle Department joined in from Sacramento. Mr. Leary mentioned that since the universal waste law was enacted in California more than 1 billion pounds have been recycled.
