Port Hosts E Waste Event Inviting Participants
On Thursday September 15, 2011 the Port of San Diego and Recon Recycling hosted an e-waste event as part of Green Port Month. The event was open for Port employees and tenants to drop off their various electronics so they could be properly disposed of. According to the EPA, “recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 US homes in a year.”
Items that were accepted to be recycled:
• Monitors • TV's • Computers • Keyboards • Printers • Phones • Audio Equipment • CD's & Floppy Disks
• Appliances • Cell Phones • Cameras • Radios • Automotive Batteries • Lamps
The Port also partnered with Sun Harbor Marina to collect unwanted cell phones. Sun Harbor has an ongoing program to collect cell phones that they donate to the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program. The EPA has stated “For every million cell phones we recycle, 35,274 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered. Recovering metals from used cell phones can reduce extraction of raw metals from the earth.”
As a result of the e-waste event, 6 crates of electronic waste were diverted from the landfill. Great job employees and tenants!
If you missed the event and still have e-waste you need to recycle, find a recycling facility at www.wastefreesd.org.
