Smart Investment Strategies for Long Term Energy Savings

Overview

This session will be hosted as a rapid-fire presentation series by local experts in key building performance areas. Participants will learn the specifics of how to consider any upfront investment based on life-cycle costs and other economic metrics. The presenters will discuss key energy consuming building systems and synergistic opportunities of a whole-building approach. Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Building Envelope, and Commissioning processes will all be a part of the discussion.

Course Objectives

  • Understand the synergies between energy using components of a building
  • Learn how to pitch your next energy efficient project based on various financial metrics
  • Discover opportunities for long term energy savings through a whole-building approach to energy retrofits
  • Gain insight into approaches taken locally to implement these smart investment strategies

This class is eligible for continuing education units from the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI).

Speakers

Kyle Frandsen has ten years of industry experience and a Master’s Degree in Building Construction with a Sustainability Concentration.  As the Sustainability Manager for Balfour Beatty’s California Division, Kyle is responsible training, strategic procurement, LEED project support, and all Prop 39 funded K-12 projects.  In 2016, Kyle was recognized as one of ENR California’s Top 20 Under 40.  In addition, Kyle is the Board Treasurer for the San Diego Green Building Council and he leads the annual Green Apple Day of Service.

Owen Barrett has a bachelor’s degree in Finance and a master’s degree in Environmental Science and Management. Before devoting his work fulltime to lumeo, Owen was an Energy Manager for a Fortune 500 company and implemented a portfolio of initiatives that continue to save $3 million annually. When he’s not helping organizations save money and energy, Owen spends his free time surfing and climbing.

Chad-Jamie Rigaud is an architectural designer at BNIM San Diego. Chad has experience on a variety of unique project types such as research facilities, wet labs, and specialized higher education spaces. His interests lie in the integration of performance-based design with design excellence and is invested in quality design execution. Most recently, Chad has presented in the Inaugural Façade Tectonic Congress in Los Angeles and SCUP 2017 in Washington DC.

Christianne Jordan is an architectural designer at BNIM San Diego. She has collaborated on a variety of complex, large scale project types including academic labs, research facilities, amenity spaces, and urban master planning. Her passion lies in human purposed design and is dedicated to design solutions that are rooted in sustainability and design excellence. Christianne has earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Iowa State University.

Ally Duncan, CBCP, LEED AP BD+C, is a Commissioning Agent with Glumac San Diego.  An energy engineering graduate of James Madison University in VA, Ally began her career in Washington, DC, providing sustainability and commissioning expertise to a variety of high-profile projects and interesting programs, such as the new Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History & Culture on the National Mall, United States Capitol Building, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, International Monetary Fund’s Headquarters building, Georgetown University, as well as the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Homes Program. Recently relocated to the West Coast, Ally is proud to utilize her government, commercial, and healthcare experience in support of Glumac’s innovative projects.

Brian Alexy develops and implements energy-saving HVAC upgrades for San Diego Mechanical Energy. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 2003 with a degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering, Brian worked for two different HVAC equipment reps on the east coast before the sustainability movement lured him out to California in 2010. Since then, Brian has been working as a HVAC service contractor dealing directly with building owners. His primary focus is identifying energy retrofits by leveraging his knowledge of HVAC equipment with energy rebates and incentives. Brian is a LEED Accredited Professional and serves on the San Diego ASHRAE chapter board as the President-Elect and Programs chair.
